Natural Unfilled PEI CNC Machining: Material and DFM Guide
Quick Answer
Natural unfilled PEI can suit dimensionally demanding insulating, fixture, sensor, and instrument components when its heat resistance, electrical role, thermal expansion, stock-shape condition, and machining stress are evaluated together. “ULTEM” is a resin trademark, not a complete machined-part specification. A useful RFQ names the manufacturer and stock-shape grade, color and filler state, governing data sheet, service temperature, electrical or flammability requirements, fluid exposure, critical datums, wall sections, surface and edge condition, quantities, and measurement environment. SINDH must confirm the exact grade, stock, geometry, process, tolerance, evidence, and schedule for the drawing.
- PEI is often chosen because a designer needs more than an ordinary plastic: electrical isolation near heat, a rigid sensor mount, a low-mass instrument frame, or a fixture that must keep relationships between holes and pads. Yet a familiar amber color does not identify the grade, and a supplier data-sheet value does not prove the behavior of a thin, heavily pocketed part.
- The practical question behind PEI CNC machining is therefore not simply whether the material can be cut. It is whether the specified stock shape can be converted into the approved geometry without allowing heat, clamping, internal stress, thin walls, burrs, cleaning, or measurement conditions to undermine function. That question must be answered before price and inspection scope are frozen.
- This guide uses Ensinger TECAPEI natural as a traceable educational reference for an unfilled natural PEI stock shape corresponding to an ULTEM 1000 polymer. It does not claim that SINDH stocks or automatically accepts that grade. The actual manufacturer, stock form, lot evidence, machining route, and acceptance plan require project review.

Translate PEI Function Into Drawing and RFQ Evidence
| Part feature or buyer question | Potential impact or risk | Drawing, RFQ, or evidence to define |
|---|---|---|
| “PEI” or “ULTEM” only | Wrong filler, stock-shape grade, color, conditioning history, or property basis | Manufacturer and grade, natural/unfilled state, stock form, governing data sheet, certificate need |
| Thin frame, ribs, pockets, or separated pads | Clamp movement, heat distortion, chatter, burrs, or post-release movement | Functional datums, free-state intent, support points, wall zones, rough/finish approach |
| Electrical insulation or flammability function | Appearance cannot prove dielectric or flammability performance in the finished assembly | Voltage, spacing, thickness, environment, governing standard, design-owner validation |
| Hot operating or inspection environment | Thermal expansion can move bores, slots, and mounting relationships | Service range, assembly temperature, inspection temperature, mating materials and allowance |
| Clean or visible surface | Tool marks, embedded contamination, sharp edges, cleaning damage, or cosmetic mismatch | Machined finish, edge condition, cleaning restrictions, visual zones, packaging and acceptance evidence |
Material question
Is the requirement for a named resin, a named machinable stock shape, or a finished component qualified to an electrical, flammability, thermal, or cleanliness requirement? These are different approval levels. Put the required level and its evidence in the RFQ.
What the Published PEI Data Actually Tells You
- Ensinger identifies TECAPEI natural as an unfilled natural PEI stock shape with an amber, slightly transparent appearance. Its published product data lists a Shore D hardness of 88 under DIN EN ISO 868, a glass-transition temperature of 216°C under DIN EN ISO 11357, a coefficient of linear thermal expansion of 5 × 10−5 1/K over 23–100°C under DIN EN ISO 11359, and water absorption of 0.05% after 24 hours and 0.1% after 96 hours at 23°C under DIN EN ISO 62.
- Those values belong to the named stock-shape product and stated methods. Shore D hardness is not a tensile-strength value, a machinability ranking, or permission to copy a tolerance from another part. The glass-transition value is also not a universal continuous-use temperature for every geometry, load, or environment. Finished-part behavior depends on thickness, stress, mating materials, thermal cycling, fluid exposure, edges, and assembly restraint.
- If a different PEI resin, glass-filled grade, color, extrusion, compression-molded stock, or supplier is proposed, review its own data and equivalence requirements. Do not combine property values from different sources into a fictional material.
Thermal Expansion, Moisture, and the Assembly Datum
- PEI can absorb less moisture than many engineering plastics, but “low” is not “zero,” and thermal expansion usually matters more than buyers first expect. A PEI carrier bolted to a metal frame may move differently as temperature changes. A room-temperature inspection can therefore agree with the drawing while a hot operating assembly shifts connector, sensor, or optical relationships.
- Identify the actual function: is a bore locating a bearing, isolating an electrode, positioning a sensor, or merely clearing a fastener? Tie tolerances to the functional datum structure and temperature condition. Long dimensions, asymmetric frames, and features far from their datum deserve particular attention. Where a mating metal part is available, provide its model and assembly constraint.
- Measurement should specify conditioning and support when these affect the result. A thin frame resting on three defined points is not equivalent to one pressed flat on a granite surface. Record the agreed temperature, stabilization approach, free or restrained state, and any fixture that influences the result.

Machining PEI Without Treating It Like Aluminum
- Natural PEI can produce clean features, but heat does not leave the cutting zone as readily as it does in metal. A dull tool, rubbing cut, crowded pocket, or poor chip evacuation can raise local temperature, smear an edge, alter surface appearance, or leave stress. Excessive clamping can distort a wall during machining and allow it to spring after release.
- Process planning should consider sharp tooling, stable engagement, chip clearance, supported workholding, staged roughing and finishing, and an inspection point after unclamping. The correct choices depend on stock form, section, geometry, tool reach, surface requirement, quantity, and approved drawing. This guide intentionally provides no universal speed, feed, tolerance, or annealing recipe.
- “Easy to remove material” is not the same as stable production of a complex part. Deep pockets, thin floors, small threaded features, interrupted walls, long slots, and multi-face datum relationships can drive the route. If a surface must remain visually uniform, state that separately from roughness or dimensional requirements.
Surface State, Edges, Cleaning, and Thermal Treatment
- For most PEI components, the useful finish is the controlled machined surface itself. Specify the permitted tool-mark direction, roughness only where functional, edge-break or burr condition, visible zones, and whether a witness or gate-like mark is unacceptable. Avoid importing metal finishing notes such as anodizing or passivation.
- Cleaning must be compatible with the named grade and service. State prohibited residues, approved agents if qualified, drying, particulate expectations, and packaging. Transparent or amber surfaces can make small scratches and trapped particles visually obvious, but appearance alone does not establish cleanliness.
- Annealing, when considered, is a thermal stress-management step rather than a surface treatment. Its need, temperature cycle, support, dimensional allowance, and inspection sequence must come from the stock-shape supplier’s guidance and the part geometry. It should never be added as a generic promise after quotation.

Four Decisions That Control a Natural PEI Part
Material identity
The design owner confirms the stock-shape manufacturer, grade, natural/unfilled state, governing data, permitted substitution, and records. Incoming evidence checks the agreed identity.
Functional environment
The OEM defines temperature, load, electrical duty, fluid exposure, cleanliness, mating materials, and validation boundary. The drawing translates them into part requirements.
Machining route
Manufacturing reviews support, access, heat, chip evacuation, rough/finish sequence, edges, cleaning, and any approved thermal treatment. First-piece evidence validates the route.
Acceptance state
Quality defines critical features, measurement temperature, conditioning, support, free or restrained state, reports, and sampling. Repeat orders use the approved revision and plan.

SINDH Machining provides engineering-led DFM for complex metals and high-performance engineering plastics from prototype to stable low-volume and repeat production. CNC milling, turning, 3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis, or turn-mill routes may be discussed against the actual drawing. First-piece, in-process, and CMM inspection are available as appropriate; material certificates and full-dimensional reports can be provided when agreed. Natural PEI availability, any named stock grade, thermal treatment, tolerance, test, report, and schedule remain project-specific.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ULTEM 1000 the same as every natural PEI stock shape?
No. ULTEM is a resin trademark, while machinable stock shapes are supplied under specific manufacturers, grades, forms, and processing histories. Specify the approved stock-shape grade and evidence.
What hardness value applies to natural unfilled PEI?
Ensinger publishes Shore D 88 under DIN EN ISO 868 for TECAPEI natural. That value applies to the named product and method; it is not a strength value or a universal machining acceptance limit.
Can PEI hold tight CNC machining tolerances?
Potential capability depends on the stock shape, geometry, wall stiffness, heat, support, datum plan, conditioning, measurement temperature, and inspection method. Review the actual drawing rather than applying one tolerance to every feature.
Should a machined PEI part be annealed?
Not automatically. Annealing is a thermal stress-management option, not a surface finish. Need, cycle, support, allowance, and post-treatment inspection must be reviewed for the stock and geometry.
What should I send for a PEI machining quote?
Send controlled 2D and 3D files, exact stock-shape grade and form, environment, critical functions and tolerances, surface and edge requirements, quantities, conditioning and inspection state, evidence, destination, and schedule objective.
Review Natural PEI Material and Geometry Before Production
Send the controlled drawing and model, named PEI stock-shape grade, material state, temperature and electrical function, mating conditions, critical features, surface and cleaning requirements, quantity tiers, inspection evidence, destination, and schedule objective.
